Frequency Asked Questions.
What are the qualifications?
You do not need to have any certifications prior to joining. You should be relatively fit, (being able to run up a couple flights of stairs without getting winded) and able to lift at least 40 pounds. We will provide you with the training you need to operate safely on emergency scenes as well as all of the proper equipment. We will also encourage you to participate in the level 1 firefighter certification program within 12 months of joining.
What if I can't make every call?
That's ok! You will be issued a pager. The pager will alert you to emergency calls. When you interview for a position we will discuss your normal availability. We know everyone can't make every call. Do your best to participate. If you are going to be away or your availability is changing due to family or work needs, please just let us know.
I really don't know anything about firefighting or medical emergencies.
That's ok too! We are here to teach you, and to learn from you. We all bring varied skills to this work. We will assign you a mentor for your probationary period. This is a senior firefighter or EMT (depending on your role) who will help you learn the ropes. This is your "go-to" person for questions, concerns etc. Remember we are here to welcome you to our team. We will provide you with the skills and training to do the job well and be safe. We want everyone to go home at the end of the emergency.
How often are there emergency calls?
Our department responded to 442 emergency calls in 2017. This is a mix of medical and fire related calls. Some weeks are very busy with multiple calls per day. However, there are also times in which we will span 1-2 weeks with no calls at all.
How can I learn more?
We encourage you to reach out to the Chief or Deputy Chief with any questions. Our department is active on social media as well. If you are on Facebook, please follow our page to see up to date information on training events, announcements, and other information. We post regularly on that page.
